33rd Annual Urbana Sweetcorn FestivalAugust 22nd & 23rd
How sweet is it? Thirty-three years and a whole lot of corn, sweet! The 33rd Urbana Sweetcorn Festival is taking place on August 22nd and 23rd in the heart of downtown and it promises to be even more exciting than last year’s! This annual event has become the largest festival in Champaign County, marking the official cap-off to summer. The main course: hot, steaming ears of sweetcorn! The festivities kick off that Friday at 5:00 pm and will last until 11:00 pm that night and all day Saturday from 11:00 am until 11:00 pm. Bring your family and friends, enjoy food, music, and more fun than you can handle. Activities range from a petting zoo and pony rides, to a rock climbing wall, and new this year indoor laser tag. The ever-popular Motor Muster will take place on Saturday from 10:30 am until 4:00 pm. This premier antique auto show is featuring a decade-by-decade of Buicks back to 1908. This year’s festival boasts a new addition! The Henry Ford Museum’s Ford Rouge Factory Tour will be offering a mini-tour of the actual factory and plenty of interactive features all bottled into one mobile 46-foot trailer that resembles the F-150 pick-up truck. Susan Toalson, Executive Director of The Urbana Business Association says, “UBA is thrilled to present this dynamic experience at the Sweetcorn Festival free of charge to everyone!” In addition to the attractions, there will be plenty of great food and merchandise from more than a hundred vendors. Another new addition that UBA is proud to present is Foghat, a classic 70’s blues/rock band, which will offer live entertainment Saturday at 9:00 pm. Other genres of music include blue grass/folk/americana, R&B, salsa, gospel and much more on three stages, with all three stages going live both nights. Over the years, nearly 50 different makes of vehicles have been on display including some very rare and high-dollar collector cars with values approaching and over $1 million. Cars that have participated in the annual Great Race and exhibited on the lawns at the prestigeous Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance have been on display. Even a film crew from the cable television Speed Channel has visited the Muster. This year, the show honors the BUICK make with a decade by decade display that will include examples back to 1908 and even a Buick-made 1923 truck. But it would not a great Buick display without the big luxury cars and a 1953 Skylark convertible and 1955 Roadmaster and 1958 Limited sedans will be there too. The show is free to visit and a great family attraction. Over 500 visitors to the show will be asked to vote for their favorite car or truck and the votes will be tallied for the winners of 3 People's Choice Awards, presented at 3:30 p.m. And as a new feature this year, the Muster has become a proud supporter of the Cunningham Children's Home of Urbana. And while you are the festival this year, you will also have an opportunity to visit the Henry Ford Museum's Rouge Plant Tour traveling display.
5K & 10K VolksmarchesOn Saturday morning at the festival, you can build up a great appetite for the sweet corn and other treats by taking walks that will bring you to places in Urbana you may have never seen! Each year we lay out new routes to let you explore the side alleys and non-vehicular routes in Urbana. Volksmarches are simply non-competitive walks along designated trails. This year our stop for both walks will be at the Spurlock Museum where you are free to linger and enjoy seeing world-class cultural and historical exhibits. For the 10 K walkers, we will continue on to explore more interesting sites on the U of I campus. A 5 K walk is 3.1 miles long and a 10 K is 6.2 miles long. All of this, including the museum is family friendly and free! Is that hard to find these days or what! Registration will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the site of the Urbana Motor Muster, at County Plaza, across from the Champaign County Court House.
